Because I'm sure a sub-$1000 Maserati powered Citroen won't turn out to be be a hellish project.

Heck ,This thing is the *perfect* Lemons car, assuming you don't intend to ever actually start the race.

Posts like this make me think Jalopnik should bring back Project Car Hell as a feature.

No Citroën EVER turns out to be a hellish project, it's all glory and happiness, never ever will you need some tool that's been out of production since Hannibal crossed the mountains nor will you ever need arms that have three elbows. (Source; Used to own a 1986 CX 25 GTi Turbo).

BUT, if I had the money AND if the car had been in northern Europe, I'd buy that thing in a heartbeat, old Citroëns are AWESOME, they look great, they're comfy as heck AND they are AWESOME.. DID I mention they are AWESOME?

I think I know this car, tried to buy it 10 years ago or so. Believe it to be an automatic if it is the same one

As a recovering Citroën-owner myself, I can attest to this.

Funnily enough, SMs are incredibly plentiful in the States, at least according to eBay listings. You see far more SMs for sale than DSs or the very few CXs and XMs that made it over here. Tellingly, most of them are somewhat broken.

Yeah, I see far more SMs in the US than here, sadly it's almost impossible to find a decent DS or CX here as well, plenty of XMs though, but I'd rather have a BX GTi 16v.

I was worried this was the one I see at Gillette for bass pro cruise nights, but that one is MUCH nicer. Hopefully the guy that owns it needs a parts car

That one is *sweet*. I really need to get back up to that show, I haven't made it yet this season.

Heh, my father owns a BX GTi 16v, back in New Zealand. They're a huge amount of fun, and I maintain that the 16-valve XU9 is one of the real hidden treasures of '80s engine design. I try to borrow it whenever I go back home. Now that they're hitting the magic 25-year mark, I'm going to have to see about bringing one to the States.

I've always lusted after the CX GTi Turbo, as well... I nearly bought one a few years ago, but ended up with a Rover SD1 instead. Funny how two cars that look and perform quite alike can be such opposites on the technology spectrum.

Had I known then what I know now, I'd've probably bought a Rover SD1 instead as well. The CX was tons of fun, but not all that great as a DD (I guess it was when it was new, but at the age of 15 it clearly had reached puberty :P)

I've only been to about half of them, thanks to rain or gloomy weather that only seems to happen on Thursdays... The ones that I've been to have been pack with lots of good finds

Yeah, I'd planned to attend the last one, but 95 through Providence was a parking lot so I didn't bother.

I've been in past years and seen some amazing stuff.

If you ever see this disreputable beast there, that is mine.

Tempting. I want to get crappy SM someday. I wouldn't have originality issues if the Maserati engine would be bad/broken/missing and it could be replaced by something. CX or SM sourced parts would probably fit in the engine bay somehow.

I seem to be having a really bad car buying fever but currently I don't have any place to store new projects (or even complete cars). Luckily that SM is too far away for me as the shipping would probably cost triple to the asking price.

This is the best deal that I have found from the local markets today. '69 Charger R/T originally with a 440 cid engine (currently none). Extremely rusty but quite cheap (for local Charger pricing standards anyway). It's a lot worse than it appears in the picture.
